We want our production to be as sustainable and environment-friendly as possible. That is why we keep improving our manufacturing and other corporate processes. Take a look to see what steps we are taking to achieve a sustainable future.
Our products are designed so that they can be used by our customers for many years. That is the basis of sustainability. High-quality products do not need to be replaced in a few years, so both material and energy necessary for their production are saved. We use innovative upholstery technologies that enable the fabric not to be glued to the foam. As a result, our products can be easily and cost effectively re-upholstered and customers can be sure that their seating furniture will last much longer than the standard guarantee period of 5–7 years. In addition, we provide repair and re-upholstering services throughout the life-cycle of our products, which means that their maximum durability is ensured and unnecessary waste is minimised.
Our aim is to produce as many components and products as possible in our facilities in Boskovice. Some of our series, such as Nido, Seance, and Spot, are up to 90% local products. The metal structures and inserts are made by our subsidiary, KOV seating, foam shells are produced by another subsidiary, PUR seating, and we sew the covers, do the upholstering and final assembly ourselves – all of that under the same roof.
In April 2024, we put two photovoltaic power plants into operation. This step was an important contribution to our self-sufficiency in terms of energy and to more sustainable operation. Since then, our consumption of electricity from the grid has decreased by between a third and a half. On very sunny days we produce significant surplus of electric power, which we largely use in our new PUR seating facility, not far from our main premises.
Our assortment includes upholstery fabrics that comply with the strictest environmental standards. Most of them are made of recycled polyester, whose production process, compared to normal polyester production, leaves a considerably lower carbon footprint and uses less water and energy. Besides fabrics made of recycled polyester, we offer woollen fabrics. Wool is a natural material which is known for its excellent wear resistance and long life. Moreover, wool is renewable and biodegradable. Our upholstery fabrics are chosen with great care and so are our leather suppliers. All the leather used by us is a by-product of the meat industry and certified carbon neutral.
In manufacturing the upholstered parts of our chairs and armchairs, we use kilometres of high-quality and beautiful fabrics every year. However, due to our product design and cutting procedures it is impossible for us to achieve a zero waste process. So, we have started using the cut-off fabric pieces, i.e. the “production waste,” to make bags and cases as well as – in collaboration with BPP, who wanted to find use for cut-off pieces of foam – soft, compact Block toy assembly kits. These kits are perfect for kindergartens and playrooms.
Some work done during the manufacturing of chairs, such as upholstery, is very physically demanding. That is why we have set up our own physiotherapy and massage centre, where our employees can relax and regenerate their muscles. Employees can also use our fitness centre and gym, where yoga and health exercise classes take place.
Maintaining and developing the tradition of crafts is a very important part of our work. We are an active member of the Upholsterers Guild and we also support the secondary school in Brno-Bosonohy where new generations of upholsterers are trained. We organise free sewing courses for Boskovice elementary school children. Our seamstresses help the children to explore sewing as a hobby, teaching them the basics of this traditional craft. We are also working with college students in related fields, supporting them in their projects to contribute to the connection of theory and practice and to further development of crafts.
We have received the EMAS certificate, which is based on ISO 14001. This environmental certificate is based on accurate recording of all company waste, energy, resources, etc., and on monitoring their increase, decrease and observance of applicable standards. The certificate may be received by companies that are environmentally friendly and that minimise the negative impact of their activities on the environment beyond their statutory obligations. In December 2022 we were granted the FSC® (FSC-C184700) certificate. It confirms the origin and environment-friendly processing of the wood that we use to produce, for example, the Lotus series. The Forest Stewardship Council® is a global non-profit organisation promoting responsible forest management and helping owners to take care of their forests. We are working on obtaining other certificates that will support our responsible approach.
